DGCC Collecting Award at DEBI Environmental Awards 2010

We were recently nominated for an environmental award at the Devon Environmental Business Initiative awards night at the Met Office in Exeter.

Five of the DGCC team attended the evening, at which we achieved the award of runner up in the Sustainable Devon category.

Dartmouth Golf & Country Club continues to adopt a positive approach towards climate change in order to reduce the companies carbon footprint, with a wide range of environmentally friendly initiatives in place.

Function Suite Refurbishment Visual

Dartmouth Golf and Country Club has announced plans to overhaul its wedding and function facilities – at a cost of £100,000. The investment is the fourth phase of the club’s planned refurbishment programme carried out in the last two years and shows the confidence it has in the market.

Managing Director Jamie Waugh, explained: “We have every confidence in the tourism and function market. We’ve had an extremely positive year with bookings up on last year and we hope the new refurbishment will encourage even more people to use our facilities. We are committed to continuously improving the clubhouse facilities including the function rooms and bar areas to match the extremely high standard of our golf courses. The investment will ensure the South Hams once again boasts a fantastic large function venue which will be used by locals as well as guests from further afield. We are a popular choice for weddings, functions and conferences and are sure this refurbishment ensures we will maintain our leading position in the area.”

The refurbishment will include new carpet and curtains and creating two smaller rooms; the Devonshire Suite able to comfortably hold up to 160 people including a stage and dance floor and the Dartmouth Suite up to 60 people.

The rooms will have a very modern feel and a flexible layout allowing them to be opened up through large doors to cater for larger functions and groups.

A new contemporary lounge bar area will provide a perfect reception area for any size of party or group, while the private terrace overlooking the golf course will be radically refurbished in April.

Work will start at the beginning of January and will be completed by the end of the month.

Previous recent refurbishments have included £150,000 on the three star hotel’s bedrooms and £120,000 on the club’s brand new Bar and Bistro.

The club has been shortlisted in two categories – Excellence Through People and Excellence in Marketing, an achievement Managing Director Jamie Waugh says is fantastic work by all the team.

“All the staff at DGCC are to be congratulated on being shortlisted for these two awards. We place high importance on investing in the skills of our staff and as such we’ve instigated a range of nationally recognised qualifications for staff, helping them plan their career pathway and get involved in the business, which is paying off. Surveys show customer satisfaction is high and staff turnover attrition rates have fallen well below the national average including local seasonal staff which is a great achievement. The awards are open to hotels from across the country so I’m very proud of everyone who has helped us to get this far.”

Judges found the programme of staff training and the marketing campaign for the new South Devon Golf Tour to be innovative, addressing the challenges and opportunities the business has faced over the past 12 months.

The SDGT allows golfers to enjoy South Devon’s top golf courses at an affordable price, providing an inexpensive ‘continental-type’ golf tour destination.
The tour is now well-known throughout the national golfing community with the result that bookings have increased throughout the year with 40 groups taking advantage of the tour, 95 per cent being new customers. The tour now has a secure future with the aim to grow it further with the partner golf courses, encouraging further visitors to the area.

The awards are run in association with Best Practice Forum and the British Hospitality Association and are open to hotels from across the UK. They recognise best practice and encourage hotels to strive for success.
The shortlisting follows on from DGCC being one of four finalists in the Devon Environmental Business Awards and also being shortlisted for the South Devon Excellence Awards.
Award winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on January 26.

But the cold snap hasn’t stopped one intrepid golfer at the Dartmouth Golf and Country Club – dressed in shorts and t-shirt no less – from taking to the course to show that while the snow might still be falling, we can still enjoy a round of golf.

Take a bow, sir! You are indeed a stalwart of the winter game.

However, just watching the video makes me feel cold… brrr!

The South Devon Golf Tour's success in bringing golfers to the South West has been recognised

The South Devon Golf Tour has been recognised for its role in bringing golfers to the South West and has been recognised with a place on the shortlist for the South Devon Excellence Awards.

The golf tour has reached the final stages of the ‘Best Sales and Marketing Award’ category, testament to the work done in bringing together seven of the region’s top golf venues in order to attract travelling golfers.

In my defence my experiences of fairways and greens have largely been reserved for pitch and putt courses, and not the full-size equivalent.

Nevertheless my obvious shortcomings with the driver, irons, not to mention the putter, did not deter me from tackling the beautifully laid out nine-hole course at Dartmouth Golf & Country Club.

Set in idyllic surroundings, with splendid views across hilly countryside, the course lived up to its billing as one of the best in the region.

And it’s not just the course that captures the imagination. The cosy on-course hotel with its fine cuisine, spectacular views and friendly atmosphere makes this a delightful place to stay.

Over the years golf has acquired a reputation as being the sole preserve of the middle classes, and some clubs have done little to shake off that tag. But Dartmouth is different.

Its unique selling point is to offer affordable accommodation packages that allow golfers to enjoy the sumptuous breakfast, embark on a round of golf, tickle the tastebuds with an evening meal in the comfortable bar area, and then get your head down for the night in one of the well-equipped rooms.

And the beauty of it all is that it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Despite zig-zagging my way down most fairways and having already got close to the water hazards and thick rough lining the course, I soldiered on.

With only three balls left in the bag, surely I had saved my best to last as I faced the precarious ninth with its steep drop, ponds on either side of the green, and bunkers cunningly positioned to give the hole an extra twist.

Sadly my first two drives skewed into the deep rough, and my last ball then plunged into the water to deny me the chance of finishing my round with a flourish.

Trudging back to the clubhouse for a well-earned pint of lager, my disappointment at these setbacks was tempered by another glance across this stunning backdrop.

It goes without saying that the course, with its profusion of water, slick greens and crafty layout, is a thrilling rollercoaster ride for the plucky beginner.

Embarrassment and frustration stalk every shot — and if you’re not right on top of your game you can easily come a cropper.

For me, it’s back to the driving range and another look at how the professionals do it on the TV.

The tournament, a Pairs Better Ball Competition, will take place on Thursday October 21 over 18 holes of championship golf, open to visitors and members.

The event will be played off a ¾ handicap, maximum allowance 18, with ladies receiving three courtesy shots after handicap deduction.

Managing Director, Jamie Waugh, explained: “This new tournament allows us to join in with Dartmouth Food Festival and not only celebrate good food but also a day of great golf. Our head chef is preparing his very popular scrumptious carvery for everyone taking part, so all our players will be able to take part in our own mini festival of food.”
