Hotel Refurbishment Update

This month, the transformation in the hotel has been very impressive! Every room has been extensively refurbished from contemporary fixtures and fittings to stylish furniture – at a total cost of £200,000 – including new beds and new flat-screen digital TV’s. In addition, the gents changing facilities have benefited from a £20,000 modern make-over! Check out the homepage for pictures of the revamp so far.

Phase 3 of the refurbishment programme will take place in January 2009. This is when the restaurant, bar and function suite will benefit from a dramatic facelift! We will keep you informed throughout the year.

Your Feedback

Over the last 12 months, we have had 1,472 replies to our guest questionnaires. We are delighted to reveal that:

96% rated the customer service at the club to be excellent or good

96% rated the standard of the accommodation at the club to be excellent or good

99% rated the quality of the golf courses at the club to be excellent or good

We have also received a number of fantastic comments, including this one from January 2008:

“A lovely relaxing post-xmas break. Will recommend even to people who don’t play golf. Will definitely come back. A 3* hotel with 4* standards and facilities, yet retaining the friendliness which gets lost in ‘snooty’ hotels.” E. D, Gloucestershire

We would also like to thank you all for your constructive observations. We take all of your views on board as we are constantly reviewing our levels of customer service and investing in the facilities at the club.

It’s official: The greenest golf & leisure resort in the UK!

11 January 2008

Dartmouth Golf & Country Club is pleased to announce that they are one of the major prize-winners in the annual International Green Apple Awards.

The resort collected the National Gold Award in recognition of their hard work and best practice in the Health, Leisure and Travel category with an invitation to have the coveted Green Apple trophy presented by botanist and TV personality David Bellamy OBE at the House of Commons.

The environmentally friendly practices at Dartmouth Golf & Country Club have ranged from the “reuse, reduce, recycle” scheme to their “switch on to switching off campaign”. All staff inductions incorporate the club’s environmental policy and the club has a “Green Committee” who meet regularly to continuously review and improve in all areas.

These practices have reduced electricity usage by 20%, gas consumption by 10%, water usage by 40% and a reduction in waste going to landfill of 40%. Approximate cost savings amount to £18,500 per year amongst a variety of other positive improvements to the business, the environment and benefits to the local community.

The award for Dartmouth Golf & Country Club, follows recognition by the Green Tourism Business Scheme as one of the Top 50 Green Hotels in the UK and previously winning the Devon Environmental Business Initiative Award for Sustainable Tourism last year.

The Green Apple Awards campaign is an annual international scheme to recognise, reward and promote environmental best practice around the world. The awards are now in their thirteenth year and well established as one of the major environmental recognition schemes, both in the UK and internationally.

The awards scheme is run by The Green Organisation; their supporters include the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. In addition, the awards are an official feeder scheme into The European Business Awards for the Environment.

Roger Wolens, of The Green Organisation commented:

“We had hundreds of nominations this year, so they did particularly well to triumph against some very strong competition.”

Jamie Waugh, Manager Director at Dartmouth Golf & Country Club says:

“We are absolutely delighted to receive such recognition, especially on a national scale! Due to the hard work and commitment of all the staff at the club, along with the cooperation of our members and visitors, the team effort has been phenomenal.

“Since 2004, we have strived to reduce the impact of our business on the environment and have been successful in doing so in a number of areas. We will endeavour to keep up the good work!”

Dartmouth Golf & Country Club is Devon’s Premier Golf & Leisure Resort. Facilities include two golf courses: the 18 hole Championship Course and 9 hole Dartmouth Course along with extensive practice facilities and pro shop. In addition, the resort boasts a 35 bedroom 3* hotel, restaurant, bar and large function suite – perfect for private and corporate functions.

The Green Apple Awards scheme is run by the Green Organisation; an independent, non-political, non-profit organisation that recognises, rewards and promotes environmental best practice around the world.

The Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) is Europe’s largest “green” accreditation scheme for the tourism sector, and rewards businesses for measures taken in a range of business practices. The Scheme is operated by Green Business, with over 1400 members.

Long Drive Sponsorship

Glazier makes it to World Championships!

Dartmouth Golf & Country Club-sponsored  long-drive professional Paul 'Hammer Time" Glazier has qualified for this year’s world championship to be held in Mesquite, Nevada, next month. Glazier, who has been a regular on the European tour this season, qualified through one of the automatic spots in the order of merit table. “Its was my goal at the beginning of the year to qualify for the world championship,” said Glazier “and to have done this with one round to go is a great achievement, particularly considering the depth of talent there is on tour”.

LONG DRIVE SPONSORSHIP

Dartmouth Golf & Country Club is delighted to announce the sponsorship of Paul ‘Hammer Time’ Glazier, Long Drivers of Europe (LDE) Long Drive Professional, for the 2007 season.

Glazier, a founder member of the club, has only been involved in the sport of long driving for less than a year but has been quick to make an impression. “It all started with a trip to the London Golf Show last April,” said the 29-year old. “I had a go on a couple of the simulators and managed to win the Nike and Mizuno long drive challenges. I came away with £500 worth of golf equipment and some invites to long drive events, so all in all it turned out to be a very worthwhile trip!”

His debut on the long drive circuit came at the RE/MAX Long Drive Championship of England last August where he managed to secure a place at the RE/MAX European Long Drive Championship held in Dublin the following month. Reflecting on his first season of competition, the sport scientist from Blackawton said: “My aim was to make it to Ireland for the European Championship and compete against some of the longest hitters on the continent. Not only did I achieve that aim, I managed to make it through to the semi-final, ranking me among the top 16 long drivers in Europe”.

The top three finalists at the RE/MAX European Long Drive Championship and the top two from the LDE’s Order of Merit went on to compete for a share of the $500,000 prize pot at the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship in Mesquite, Nevada, in October. With his 2006 experiences to fall back on, and the resources available to him at Dartmouth Golf & Country Club, Glazier is confident he can follow in his rivals’ footsteps in 2007: “I gained a valuable insight into the technical and tactical demands of long driving during my two events in 2006 and I know exactly what I need to do in order to mix it with the very best in 2007. Fortunately for me, Dartmouth Golf & Country Club is the perfect environment for me to hone my skills, tune my equipment, and improve my physical conditioning as the facilities and expertise there are first rate.”

Jamie Waugh, Managing Director of Dartmouth Golf & Country Club, is delighted to welcome the big-hitting Devonian back to the club where he played much of his golf as a junior. “We are very pleased to have Paul back on board,” said Waugh. “His performances during his debut season were admirable and I am confident he can go on to do big things this year. I am sure the facilities and resources available to him at Dartmouth Golf & Country Club will help him enormously in his quest to make it to the 2007 RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship. My only slight concern is the number of golf balls Paul might lose out the back of the driving range!”

DEVON ENVIRONMENTAL BUSINESS INITIATIVE

WINNERS OF THE SUSTAINABLE TOURISM CATEGORY

There is an amazing team effort in implementing a simple, practical, and comprehensive environmental policy.  Dartmouth Golf and Country Club is a medium sized business which has to be run efficiently and profitably.  With considerable early support and encouragement from South Hams Council, the Golf Club have embraced environmental issues across all areas from house-keeping to green-keeping.  Indeed the judges were particularly impressed with the involvement of staff and regular meetings and internal environmental audits. Also noteworthy were the efforts that the Club have gone to with their suppliers, resisting the easy option to compromise, but instead seeking out the sustainable option whenever possible. There are a number of new initiatives the Club are looking at particularly with regard to energy efficiency and possible alternative green energy sources.

GREEN TOURISM

Over the last year Dartmouth Golf & Country Club have gone from a 'Silver' Green Tourism award to a 'Gold' level standard which shows the club is committed to the environment and its eco friendly products and services. The Green Tourism Business Scheme commented "The site is an excellent local Green Champion."  DGCC joined the Green Tourism Business Scheme two years ago with a view to changing its products and services to become more eco-friendly by reducing carbon emmissions, recycling waste and promoting practices that both staff and visitors could employ to 'save our environment.' An environmental policy was adopted and a Green Committee established to focus on 'Green' developments and initiatives throughout the company and to encourage employees to become more energy efficient and eco-friendly. As to the future, DGCC will be working towards the Queen's Award for environmental achievement and are exploring using alternative energy or renewable energy which could save the company is excess of £25,000 per year.
